Papachay Peruvian Coffee
Papachay is a Peruvian café and roastery based in San Carlos, CA, founded by husband-and-wife team Max and Juliana. With two family-run coffee farms located in the lush, high-elevation rainforests along the eastern slopes of the Andes near Villa Rica, they source organic beans directly from origin bringing a true farm-to-cup experience to their community. The name “Papachay,” derived from Quechua, is a casual greeting among men, reflecting the brand’s warm, familiar, and community-driven spirit. After nearly two decades of growth from supplying raw beans to local roasters to establishing their own roasting operation and opening a brick-and-mortar café in 2018, the team sought to evolve their brand. The goal was to refresh their existing logo while building a more cohesive visual identity that honored their roots and elevated their presence. The design draws heavily from Papachay’s cultural and agricultural roots. Key elements include coffee vines and leaves, references to Peruvian heritage, and the Andean cock-of-the-rock—Peru’s national bird cleverly integrated into a “P” mark from an earlier concept the founders wanted to preserve. The final identity enhances this foundation with a rustic texture treatment and a color palette inspired by both the Peruvian flag and the coffee plant—rich reds and greens—balanced by warm creams and browns to reflect the inviting atmosphere of the café. A deep midnight blue carries over from the original brand, grounding the system with a sense of continuity. The typography system reinforces the brand’s unrefined, rural character, pairing bold, textured display type with secondary elements that echo a vintage, printed feel. The result is a flexible identity that scales seamlessly from a detailed primary mark to a simplified icon while staying rooted in authenticity, heritage, and craft.
